Avatars or Characters doesn't help in game. It is just pure visual aesthetics only.
You need gems to unlock them at random order. Fixed 50 Gems for every avatars or characters.
Branches
You need to think in advance to lessen the branch obstacles possibility or being thrown away.
There are two things you need to consciously aware when turning the branches.
The first one is the small area you are walking. You need to make it sure that there is no branch at your left if the turn is counter clockwise or right if the turn is clockwise.
The second is the area of your next obstacle branch. Check it if has another branch same as the first one. Just double tap or triple tap if needed to remove the obstacle branch. But make sure that there is no branch in your area or you will be block or worst thrown away.
The Branch Ketchapp Cheats
Use any hex editor apps that are available for android/iOS and change the value of HEX Dword to any amount you want.

If the codes doesn't work, it is possible that your android version is not compatible with the code I provided above.
Fortunately you can do it manually! To do it manually, just use search function in your hex editor app, enter your current Gems value in The Branch Ketchapp and search for it (choose DWORD) .
If you see a small list of results, example 10. Just edit the value of them one by one until you can find the real HEX!
If you see a large list of result, you need to change the value of your current Gems value in The Branch Ketchapp by either using/consuming or adding it. Go back to the list and find your new current Gems value in The Branch Ketchapp to the large list and you can now edit the value any amount you want.
